Before I discuss some Graves’ Disease diet tips that can help restore your health back to normal, let me first tell you that not only am I a licensed healthcare professional, but I was personally diagnosed with Graves’ Disease. And nutrition definitely played a huge role in restoring my health back to normal. I will warn you that being a holistic doctor I am biased towards natural treatment methods, so while most endocrinologists label Graves” Disease as “incurable”, based on my own personal experience I believe that Graves” Disease can be cured, and one’s diet is important in restoring their health.

So if you are looking for Graves’ Disease diet tips that will help restore your health back to normal, then you are going to enjoy reading the following information. As I just mentioned, diet can play a big role in treating Graves” Disease naturally. However, I will tell you that while eating healthy and incorporating nutritional supplements can be beneficial, there are other factors that will also play a role in your recovery, which I will briefly mention in this article.

I also will warn you that different doctors will have varying opinions as to what is considered to be “healthy” with regards to one’s diet. And let’s be honest for a moment…nobody eats the “perfect” diet, as in my opinion it’s okay to be “bad” every now and then. For example, I consulted with a patient once who loved milkshakes, which as you might guess isn’t too healthy. And while it would be ideal for this person to completely eliminate milkshakes from her diet, having one every so often usually isn’t a big deal. And the same goes with other foods.

Of course there are exceptions. For example, someone with celiac disease probably won’t be able to eat a gluten-based food “every now and then” without having a bad reaction. Another example involves someone who can’t “settle” for a milkshake every now and then, or an occasional slice of pizza, etc. In other words, some are better off staying away completely from the “bad” foods, or else they begin consuming too much of it.

Testing For Food Allergies Is A Good Idea

Anyway, one of the first things I will recommend before anyone changes their eating habits is to get tested for food allergies. Going to a regular allergy doctor might not be the best option, as usually they will test for only IgE antibodies. You might want to visit a holistic doctor and receive an ELISA/EIA panel, which also measures the IgG antibodies, and is usually more accurate (although this does depend on the lab that performs the test).

Another alternative is to consider a GI Health Panel. The company Diagnos-Techs offers this type of test, which measures the health of the gastrointestinal tract and includes over one dozen tests that utilize saliva and stool specimens. They also offer a FIP-Food Intolerance Panel, that will determine whether you are allergic to four of the most common foods (gluten, soy, milk, and egg proteins).

A less costly method is to conduct an elimination diet, where you eliminate all of the common food allergens (wheat, soy, dairy, etc.), and then slowly introduce a potential allergen, one at a time. There are different ways of doing this, but here is an example. You can go on a purification program (described shortly), and then once the purification program is completed, introduce wheat for 3 days, and see how your body reacts. Just make sure you don’t add more than one potential allergen, as if you were to add both wheat and dairy for example, and had a bad reaction, you wouldn’t know which allergen was responsible.

A Purification Program Can Be Beneficial

As I just mentioned, many people can benefit from a purification program. There are different types of these programs, and when doing one it is wise to be under the guidance of a competent healthcare professional. When I put one of my patients on a purification program, I prefer having them avoid gluten, dairy, soy, and other common allergens for at least twenty one days. Once again, the reason for this is because they are common allergens.

On the other hand, I encourage them to eat plenty of vegetables, some fruits, as well as chicken, turkey, and certain types of fish. I do recommend that they purchase organic food, at least with regards to the meats. While it would be great if they can buy everything organic, I realize some people can’t afford this, and so if you must pick and choose, I’d recommend to eat organic meat, and try to stay away from non-organic vegetables and fruits that are high in pesticides. These aren’t necessarily the only foods I recommend, as most people can consume a small quantity of raw nuts (sunflower seeds, almonds, etc.), as well as some other foods.

An Actual Example Of A Graves” Disease Diet:

Here is an example of a daily protocol when I first went on my Graves’ Disease diet. Keep in mind that this is just an example, and is not a diet that I stayed on permanently (although it did train me to eat better, and I still eat healthy to this day):


• Protein drink which contained 2 cups of purified water, I cup of mixed berries (raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries), a healthy form of protein powder, and 1 teaspoon of flax seed oil (after one month I added one raw organic egg to this).

Mid-morning snack:

• Organic apples and raw sunflower seeds


• Grilled chicken salad: organic mixed greens and spinach, organic grilled chicken

Mid-afternoon snack:

• Another protein drink (very filling, and actually tastes pretty good)


• Organic roasted turkey

• Some type of vegetable (i.e. squash)

After-Dinner Snack:

• 1 cup of raw nuts (almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, cashews)

Although this diet is relatively healthy, you’ll notice that it isn’t perfect. I probably should have incorporated more vegetables, but overall it was a healthy diet. Today I still eat healthy, but I do incorporate some whole grains occasionally (for example, I will have a turkey wrap or sandwich with whole wheat bread), and every now and then I’ll even go out and get some pizza, eat some chocolate, etc.

If you currently eat a lot of junk food and/or have strong sweet and carbohydrate cravings, I wouldn’t expect you to change overnight. Under such circumstances it is best to take it slow, and when I first consult with a patient that has strong sweet and carb cravings, I put them on a protocol to help them get rid of these cravings, and thus make the transition to a healthier diet much easier. I personally was brought up eating foods like Fruit Loops, Burger King Whoppers and fries, and drank plenty of Hawaiian Punch. And while I was already eating much healthier when I was diagnosed with Graves” Disease, when I first began trying to eat healthy it did take some time.

Drink Plenty Of Purified Water

You also want to drink plenty of purified water during this time, and avoid any soft drinks, and even most juices, which can be high in sugar. As for what type of water you should drink, different doctors have different opinions, but I recommend either water that has gone through a reverse osmosis process or distillation, and then is enhanced with minerals. Some will disagree with me, preferring water without minerals added. Either way, stay away from the tap water, and I’d also be cautious about drinking spring water unless if you know the source is a good quality.

What Are Goitrogens?

There are also certain goitrogens you should try your best to avoid. Goitrogens interfere with the function of the thyroid gland, which admittedly isn’t as big of a factor in someone with a hyperthyroid condition like Graves” Disease as it would be with someone with a hypothyroid condition. But still, you want to at least minimize the following foods, and some of them you will want to avoid completely. I personally ate some of the following goitrogens in moderation (i.e. spinach and broccoli), while completely avoiding others (i.e. soy). Anyway, here are some of the goitrogens to be aware of:

• Soy

• Broccoli

• Brussel sprouts

• Cauliflower

• Kale

• Spinach

• Turnips

• Peaches

• Strawberries

Where Should You Shop?

As for where should you shop, although you can shop at your local health food store, I personally like Trader Joes, which is a national chain that has plenty of natural and organic food at affordable prices. Some “regular” grocery stores, and even places like Wal-Mart sell some natural and organic food as well. While my wife and I love shopping at Trader Joes for most of our items, we do buy some of our foods at a local health food store, and a few items in a “regular” supermarket.

Other Factors Besides Diet Can Impact Your Health

Besides eating healthy, there are some other factors that can affect your health. Since it’s difficult to get all of the vitamins and minerals you need through your diet, taking some quality nutritional supplements can be beneficial (i.e. B vitamins, Vitamin D, iodine, essential fatty acids, a multi-mineral supplement, etc.). As I’m sure you know, it’s also beneficial to be on a regular exercise program. Another big factor for people with Graves” Disease is to manage the stress in their lives, as while just about everyone has to deal with stress, we all have different coping mechanisms. And those people that don’t do a good job of managing the stress in their lives are more likely to have stressed out adrenal glands, which can both lead to and exacerbate an autoimmune condition.

Should You Consult With A Natural Endocrine Doctor?

While many endocrinologists label Graves” Disease as being incurable, the truth is that many people like myself are turning to natural treatment methods to help restore the function of the thyroid gland, and thus avoid anti-thyroid drugs and radioactive iodine. A competent natural doctor that focuses on endocrine disorders can help you with your diet, recommend quality supplements, and put you on a complete program that can potentially restore your health back to normal. While not everyone is a candidate for natural treatment methods, most people can benefit from following a natural treatment protocol.

The Social Stigma On Call Center People and The Growing Issue On Unemployed Graduates – Part I


A friend of mine, much to his chagrin, was duty-bound to study nursing in order to conform to what his parents wanted (a familiar but sad reality in many Filipino households). And being the good son that he was, he graduated with flying colors and eventually passed the nursing licensure exam. However, after four painstaking years of memorizing tongue-twisting medical terms plus an additional two years of hard hospital labor (as volunteers, which means you get no pay at all but you work in various killer shifts, and what is more damning is the fact that there are hospitals who charge neophyte nurses fees before they allow them to become slaves in their infirmaries, talk about one of the biggest ironies of work life), my friend and his family realized that thanks to the burgeoning world economic crisis, the future in landing a lucrative job in nursing looks bleak at best.

There is a massive influx of registered nurses today and that is the reason why local hospitals have the guts to offer sarcastically take-it-or-leave-it cellar salaries. And the suffering of local RNs does not even end there. The hiring process has become so stringent you may have to literally wipe someone’s ass in order to get hired – for a measly $170 per month. My friend, not wanting to be a part of the merciful demographics, decided to tell his parents that he will be applying for a call center job. What he got was a resounding “NO”.

The widespread perception on working in call centers is that it is a no-brainer job and many parents do not want their kids to waste all that they have learned in college by working at night, wearing a headset, and talking to angry Americans. The description is true, most call center shifts are at night because of the need to interact live with customers on the other side of the world which is on a totally different time zone, hence, the discrepancy in work schedules. However, representatives who provide customer service and technical support for customers based in Australia work during the day. The depiction of call center agents wearing headsets is also generally true, although there are other facets of customer support which does not entail verbally interacting with customers using the phones and these include email and chat support. The portrayal of call center agents as regularly talking to angry Americans may be partly true although there is no statistics yet on the ratio of angry callers against those who are not, and frankly speaking, it is also hard to discern whether a caller is angry or not.

But in the midst of all these negative feedback on the job of a call center agent, the advantages and benefits far outweigh the downbeat side of it. First off, do not construe this as a personal attack but nurses do get hollered at as well. In fact, they have to face angry patients and relatives of patients on a daily basis and on a more intimate fashion. I would rather sit in an air-conditioned room and listen to an American shout at me on the phone knowing that he is halfway around the world than feel the hot breath of a sick person on my face shouting invectives at me because he does not feel well. Second, the claim that call center work is a no-brainer is definitely the inexpert outburst of people who have not worked in this industry at all or those who have worked within the confines of a call center but have not had the opportunity to be promoted to other non-agent positions.

The truth is, the call center trade is one of the most dynamic industries in the entire planet. If applied to manufacturing and production, the call center system will push those industries at least a decade forward. Always gunning for the highest customer service scores, call centers utilize some of the most rigorous monitoring and coaching program in order to retain the trust of their clients. Quality attributes pertaining to calls have been strategically quantified in order to make the assessment program uncomplicated. Very few manufacturing companies make use of this quality numeric program and if company owners only knew how effective this system can be to their business, their company’s productivity would have tripled within a short period of time. The training progression in call centers is also topnotch. Most of the well-known contact centers enroll their potential managers to high-priced personality development and management training programs including Six Sigma certification, Cisco training, Microsoft accreditation, and a lot more, things that normal employees would not enjoy in non-call center companies.

Typically a breakfast consists of lean meat, eggs, oatmeal, assorted vegetables; the main target is to get complex carbs and proteins early on in the day. Lunch consists of mostly vegetables and light steamed meat, most importantly carbohydrates are consumed little to none. Dinner consists of vegetables and soups, with some healthy meat. Snacks throughout the day consist of natural sugars and low salt; mostly snacks are assorted fruits (healthy sugars) and nuts (salt-free). Furthermore, a strict following of at least 8 glasses of plain water a day, and cutting out alcohol (Okay maybe you can have a drink once in a while, but no binging).

Some fashionistas such as Kat Von D and Madonna pride in a vegan diet that is free of all kinds of eggs, meats, and dairy. You can look up on their diets and how it is linked to good skin and overall health.

Strong exercise regime

If you want to be fit there are plenty of exercise regimes out there, but our favorite one for women is that of Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr, who exposes her fitness regime and dietary plans on Women’s Health and Fitness Magazine, and an excellent article by Huffington post on fitness plans for male models who should be focused on bodybuilding and toning of their muscles

Know your target market

As you intend to step into the fashion industry, you should also think about what target market best suits your look. For example in America there is an advent of plus-sized models, because they are more representative of regular, everyday women in America. As such, there is a need to think about the market that best suits the look and style you have to offer. You may have started out in your own home country, but as you decide to pursue a long term career in fashion modeling, there derives a need to think of international possibilities to advance your career.

Sign on with a model agency

If you are currently freelancing, a good way to step up your game is to sign on with a credible modeling agency that will spearhead your career. As a freelancer, you have the ability to undertake multiple contracts with various modeling agencies. You will thus be able to make a more informed choice on the modeling agency that will best work with your interests. Signing on a year’s contract or similar to that like, will mean getting more opportunities with bigger clients, and representing the agency on the international stage as well. Selecting the Character’s Objective


This article focuses on another dramatic choice, namely, what the character wants. What is the conscious intent of the character? This element is commonly called the objective or intention. It is also called the inner action or subtext. Motivation and goal are other labels sometimes used for the objective.

The selection process for the objective or intention is a critical part of the story telling process. Why? Because the essence and purpose of the entire story is carried forward by, what each character wants. While one character pursues a given goal, their objective faces counter thrusts by other characters or forces within the story, and thus creates conflict. Without this conflict, there would be little dramatic structure to the story to engage and entertain the audience.

Selecting the wrong intention or not conveying the intention to the audience can distort an entire scene and possibly the whole play. It can leave the scene with little or no conflict and thus no purpose. On the other hand, an inspired and well-developed intention can illuminate a scene to fantastic heights making it forever memorable in the mind of the audience.

How do you select the objective of the character? Where do you find the clues about what it might be? Look first to the script for it might be openly expressed in the dialogue. It might also be hid in the stage directions. It could also be concluded from information revealed later in the story. Another clue may lie in the wants of opposing characters.

One of the pitfalls in selecting an objective is to follow blindly the intentions indicated by the dialogue or stage directions. They are not always correct. The intention can be a contradiction to the character’s dialogue and action. In life, people do not always reveal their true intentions and the result can be quite dramatic. Delaying such a revelation can make the story structurally stronger, especially when it deals in fraud or deception.

There are many other factors to consider in selecting the objective such as, who are you in the story, your relationship with other characters, and the non-character obstacles you face. Are you the protagonist, the one we root for, or the antagonist, the one creating the obstacles? Or are you a minor character with an incidental function in the story?

The type of actor you are also has a bearing on which objective is best. For instance, Clint Eastwood would probably select a different objective than would Brad Pitt were Brad Pitt playing the same role. Likewise, the type of play you are doing is also a consideration. A scene played as a comedy versus one played as a drama might result in a different set of objectives for the characters.

Once you have read the entire script and have determined how your scene fits into the over all story, you should have a set of possibilities. Which one is the best? Which one will make the scene come alive? Some actors select an objective that is comfortable for them to portray. Instead, the choice should be one that supports the relationships, the scene, and the story.

To make strong dramatic choices, one needs to follow some analytical guidelines. First ask yourself, whose objective is it you are seeking? From whose viewpoint? Certainly, it is not the director’s. Not yours, the actor. The objective is selected from the viewpoint of the character you are playing. What the character thinks he or she wants at that given moment in the play.

Next, the objective should be formulated in active terms such as: To obtain…to have… to do… It should be short simple phases in the character’s own language and worded in such a way that the character wants to do something specific. Moreover, behind each intention, each objective, there a reason or motivation that moves the character toward action.

Look first to intentions with selfish motives. In credible drama, as in life, you won’t find noble motives. When it comes down to the decisive moment, we are all looking out for number one, ourselves. So make your characters real by seeking selfish wants.

At this point, let’s look at some objectives and evaluate them. Before looking ahead, attempt to identify the most common faults.


1. To introduce Howard to Ellen so Howard won’t be around so much and then Amy and I can get together at the apartment I share with Howard.

2. To get my mother into the hospital for an emergency operation

3. To make my character reveal his true intentions

4. To make the audience laugh at this character

5. To indicate the struggle of my character

Compare your analysis of the objective with the faults identified below:

1. To long, not specific, to many objectives, not actable. Better objective: To get Howard out.

2. Weak objective, not specific, not selfish. Better objective: To save my mother.

3. Made from actor’s viewpoint, not in the character’s own words. Better objective: To tell the truth.

4. From the playwright or director’s viewpoint, not in the character’s own words. Plays a result and not character’s wants. Better objective: To get some respect.

5. From the actor’s viewpoint, not in the character’s own words, not selfish, and lacks motivation from character. Better objective: To get out alive.

Once you have chosen the character’s objective, check that the scene or even the play provides enough dramatic resistance. This resistance may be the counter intention of another character. It may also be internal hurdles such as self-doubts, beliefs, commitments, or phobias. Other obstacles such as the nature’s elements, time restrictions, or physical barriers may have a bearing on how the objective is selected.

Usually, in a two-character scene, the other character provides the opposition. The following example demonstrates how dramatic conflict is obtained through opposing intentions and emotions. Note how certain choices support the dramatic equation, risk vs. consequences, and propel the story to its greatest potential.

An armed psychopathic killer escapes, hitches a ride and attempts to persuade the women driver of his innocence. To pass through the roadblocks, he needs her help. Which pair of intentions would result in the most dramatic scene?

Intention/Emotion Pairings

1. Him: To escape/Fear

1. Her: To help him escape/Anticipation

2. Him: To convince her/Determination

2. Her: To find the truth/Determination

3. Him: To keep from killing her/Rage

3. Her: To save myself/Terror

In the first pairings, the intentions converge on a common objective, and the main obstacle becomes the roadblocks and the police. The protagonist/antagonist boundaries become murky and we are not sure for whom to root.

The second pairings has the intentions in conflict, but the stakes are not high enough to pull in the audience.

In the third pairings, the stakes are much higher for the intentions ignite a kill or be killed, do or die crisis. The killer must hold back his rage having to depend on the woman to get him through the roadblocks. The woman driver, however, is not convinced of his story and therefore, knows he will likely kill again. She must act to save her own life.


The next consideration is how long do you stay with one objective? Do you keep the same objective throughout the scene or does a scene contain a number of objectives? Here again, some general guidelines should be followed.

As a rule, select one dominant objective for the scene. Stay with that objective until you succeed or fail, or until something comes to change it. Let’s use the above example to illustrate this process.

Suppose at the roadblock, the police officer asks the woman to unlatch the trunk so he can check inside. She about to flick the remote switch opening the trunk when instead she hands him the ignition keys. Something has changed and calls for a new set of objectives. Now her objective has changed from being passive to taking action. It might be to signal the police officer in some way and her emotion might change to determination. Your choices may be different in this scene, yet the principles remain the same. Select one dominant objective for the scene. Stay with that objective until your character succeeds or fails, or until something comes to change it. You would then select another objective, one befitting the situation and your character’s role in the story.

To aid in the selection process, I’ve compiled a list of intentions from various workshop scenes. This list provides examples and the proper format for stating the intention. They are listed according to worthiness.

Sports Injury Law


Sports are a pastime and are meant to be fun. Minor injuries can occur and are even inevitable in certain sports but serious injury caused by another person is a different story and may be grounds for a lawsuit.

If you have been injured by the actions of another player or a coach or a referee, you should first seek immediate medical attention. Then, depending on your situation, filing a lawsuit may be the appropriate next step for you. It is extremely important that the attorney you choose to handle your case is one who has handled sports injury cases before and is, therefore, familiar with this tricky area of the law.

Was it a contact or non-contact sport?

The general view of the courts is that sports are physical and sometimes dangerous and you are responsible for taking that risk. However, that doesn’t mean another player or coach or referee cannot be held liable if you are seriously injured.

The standard in personal injury cases is negligence – if someone’s negligence causes injury, they are liable. This is still the rule in non-contact sports. An example of a non-contact sport is tennis. If you were injured during a tennis match, then you would sue under a negligence theory – i.e. the player or coach was negligent in some way that caused your injury.

However, with contact sports, there is the contact sports exception (also known as the contact sports doctrine), which states that a person is only liable if their actions were intentional or willful and wanton. Contact sports include soccer, baseball and basketball. If physical contact is an expected part of the sport, then it qualifies as a contact sport. If you were injured while playing a contact sport and you believe that the injury was caused by another player’s intentional actions, you would sue under the contact sports exception.

Proving it was intentional or willful or wanton

Proving that the defendant acted intentionally or recklessly will depend on the facts and other factors such as whether the action is what is acceptable or routine in that particular sport. For example, brushing into a player as they slide into home base is typical but tripping the player is not. The facts of your case and the range of normal activity in the particular sport you were playing will be used to prove intent.

Was it a full contact sport?

Full contact sports are another exception all their own. For these sports, the standard is intentional or completely beyond normal activity for that particular sport. Full contact sports include football, hockey and boxing, where physical contact is actually an element of the game. So, if you were seriously injured during a football game, you would have to prove that the defendant’s actions were intentional or that the defendant’s actions went completely beyond what is acceptable in that particular sport.

Was it caused by a non-participant?

It is believed that holding non-participants like a coach or a referee accountable for negligence would negatively affect the sport as a whole. Still, the standard is that these non-participants owe a duty to not harm others. Coaches are expected to provide instruction on safety and referees are expected to stop a game when they see a violation. If you believe a coach failed to provide safe instructions or if you believe a referee allowed a violation to continue that led to your injury, you may have grounds for a lawsuit. Again, it will depend on the facts of the case and the expectations of the particular sport.

Was your child hurt playing a sport?

If your child was injured while playing a sport at school or at another facility, the school, team, coach or facility may liable depending on the circumstances. If the playing field or area was not properly maintained, it could be a negligence issue. If, as noted above, the players were not properly supervised or the referees were not calling violations or another player intentionally harmed your child, you could have a case based on the above noted law. Either way, you should speak to an attorney as soon after your child receives medical attention.

Improving Your Self-Image – How and Why it is Important


You can’t be happy if you have a poor self-image, and of course, happiness is what we all want. What is self-image? Briefly, it’s what you think about yourself — the image that you have built up in your mind about how good, successful, talented, or how unlucky, ugly and fat you are. Changing it is not something you can do overnight; it’s an image that was developed over many years (your lifetime), an image that is based on all your successes and failures. To a large degree it’s also based on how you feel other people react to you, and how they feel about you. It is the foundation upon which your personality is built.

Self-image is important because it rules literally everything that happens to you in your life. It limits how successful you will be, and it certainly limits your happiness and well-being, and this means you must have a good self-image to feel good. If you have a poor one it’s going to limit you throughout your life.

Fortunately, you can change what you think about yourself, but it’s not something that can be done overnight. It took years to build up the self-image you have, so you’re going to have to work to change it. Furthermore, much of what you think about yourself may be right, but it’s well-known that most people underestimate themselves. You are likely more creative, more talented, and even better-looking than you think. The key is to bring your self-image into line with your “true” self, but be honest: it’s not much use trying to change it into something that it isn’t; it won’t work. You have to truly believe that it is a valid image, and you have to be convinced that it is the “real” you.

How do you go about this? Strangely, you have to be subtle. If you just close your eyes and forcefully tell yourself that you’re going to change, you won’t. It’s like trying to break a bad habit. As you likely know, if you try to force yourself to break a habit by thinking about it continuously, you won’t get anywhere. But it is, indeed, “thought” that will bring about the change. It takes time, but I’m sure you know that thought is a powerful thing.

So if you truly believe you can change yourself, you can. You have to begin by getting a clear picture of what you would like to be, or perhaps I should say, the person you believe you really are. Be realistic. Think in terms of your successes and your strengths. Use them to build up a convincing picture of yourself and how you will act under various circumstances. Picture this “new self” in your mind.

Why does this work? It works because of the way your mind, nervous system and brain operate. You have both a conscious and an unconscious mind; the key is to reach your unconscious mind. The unconscious mind plays a much larger role in our life than you may think. It is the thing that shapes and forms our self-image. We think about our problems and failures; we turn them over and over in our mind, and even when we are no longer consciously thinking about them, our unconscious mind is dealing with them.

If we spend most of our time thinking about our successes and the good things in our life, we will have few problems with our self-image. But for most of us, this isn’t the case. We spend far too much time thinking about our failures, our shortcomings, and the people we have a grudge against. We think about them until they become ingrained in our personality

To change your self-image you have to undo all the negative programming that has been going on for years, so it’s obviously not going to be a “quick fix.” It’s going to take time, but it can be done. The trick is to “fix” on this new image — the image that is based on your successes and other pluses about yourself. Picture it as much as possible, but do even more than that: picture the details. Picture everything about yourself — and make sure it is an image you are satisfied with and proud of. And in time your self-image will definitely improve.

News Writing – How To Write A Sports Report In 4 Steps


News writing style is just as important for sports reporting as it is for general news, business stories or any other journalistic work.

The advantage of sports writing is that you are allowed a little it more leeway in your choice of words. In crime or business writing, you are restricted in your use of adjectives and adverbs and are encouraged to focus more on nouns and verbs.

Sports writing, however, allows you to go to town in describing plays, the atmosphere, fans and other colorful aspects of a sporting event.

For this article, we will go through, step by step, how to write a straightforward sports report using quotes.

Ideally, any sports story would have quotes from the winners and losers. Indeed, many sports articles are written around what athletes say rather than what they have achieved on the field of play.

However, you also have sports articles written without quotes. When rookies learn how to write like a journalist, especially in sport, they are likely to come across the structure that we will show you here.

We will adapt the NBA game between Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers on April 1 as our example article.

1. Intro – the most important news aspect of a sports game is the score. Who won? How did they win and what effect did the victory have? Also important is whether we are writing from a Boston perspective or Cleveland. In this case, we will go with Cleveland.

“Cleveland Cavaliers lost 98-96 to the Boston Celtics after Delonte West’s sank two free throws in the final seconds, dropping three and a half games behind the Pistons for the best record in the Eastern Conference.”

2. More info – The above is enough for those who have a passing interest in the sport. However, NBA fans would want more information and you could give it to them in one or two paragraphs.

“The Cavaliers were without star player LeBron James, suffering from a knee injury, while the Celtics were minus Paul Pierce. Gerald Green led the way for Celtics with 25 points while Kendrick Perkins had 12 points and nine rebounds.

The Cavaliers, for whom Larry Hughes scored 24 with Sasha Pavlovic scoring 17, have already qualified for the play-offs while Boston are out of the running.”

3. Quote – This is where you can provide a quote from the coach or a key player from both teams. You can precede each saying with a lead-in paragraph or go straight into the quote.

“Celtic forward Al Jefferson, said: ‘They were missing their best player and we were missing our best play. We just stuck in there.’

Cavs coach Mike Brown said James’ absence was a key factor in their loss.

‘We miss LeBron. We miss LeBron every time he doesn’t play. He’s our guy,’ said Brown.”

4. The rest – Once you got the main information and key quotes out of the way, you can go on to describe the game. Even better would be to describe just one or two plays and include more quotes.

The thinking behind sports articles is that people would have watched the game on TV anyway and would not want boring game description. Therefore, quotes from the people who matter, such as athletes and coaches, would offer better reading value.

There are many types of sports news writing that is offered around the world everyday. We have merely showed you its simplest form. Certainly, it is a rewarding form of news writing for journalists who love their sport. And the structure they use allow them to adapt their skills to any type of journalism writing.
