Did you know that women at a biological level are a attracted to strong charismatic men who have the characteristics of a good leader, a good husband and a good father? And ladies, did you know that men are genetically programmed to be leaders? That is the reason you need to wake up the leader in your husband to save the marriage.

How so? you are asking. It is 2012 and women have been emancipated for decades. Is there total equality in today’s world? The answer is no.

• Not in the board room – How many leaders are women?

• Not in the wage structure – Do females in equal jobs to men earn the same pay? What is the percentage of women who have jobs in leadership roles?

• Not in society – What is the ratio of men to women in jobs which affect society or the community?

• Not in the home – Who is ultimately responsible for the housework, the child rearing, the family environment

• And probably not in relationships either.

I was brought up in an era where a man had to ask you out first, he had to set the ground rules of the relationship, and other than on leap year, he had to get down on his knees to ask you to marry him. My mother let me know in no uncertain terms that the man was the provider and leader in the marriage. A wife’s main purpose was to look after her husband, have his dinner ready when he got home, raise the children.

Sadly, I was brought up in a family where my father passed when I was only three months old and and my only brother was killed when I was six.. So because of these circumstances, I was raised solely by women – my mother and three big sisters, so I never experienced this male leadership quality.

I, myself, assumed the leadership role at a very early age. I rebelled from what society thought was expected and became a very assertive leader, both in my career and in my relationships. Right from the start of my career I worked in management positions. And do you know what? Unfortunately my two marriages did not last and neither did my career.

There are many issues why my marriages ended in divorce, which I am not going to discuss here, but if I am truthful with myself I acknowledge that one of the major problems in both marriages was that neither of my husbands were leaders. I realise now that it is important to help your husband to save the marriage by waking up the leader in him.

And when I reflect on my chosen career, I understand now that my powerful leadership roles were a threat to my male counterparts. A number of men experience difficulty in accepting females as leaders and I came across this attitude many times in my career. Even in the work place men need to wake up the leader in themselves.

Why? Well as I stated previously males are genetically programmed to be leaders. It goes back to the caveman days and involves the hunter instinct. The hunter mode is very strong in men when they first meet a new girlfriend. They show off their leadership skills – they ask you out; they pay for the meal; they open the door; they ask you to marry them.

And females are subconsciously attracted to these behaviours because they are driven by biological instincts – they fall heads over heals in love with this potential husband; this provider; this potential father of her children.

But for some unknown reason men loose that leadership drive. That is why you need to help your husband to save the marriage by waking up the leader in him.

The secret to saving the marriage lies in building attraction, not in solving problems. As a woman it is a fact that you are driven more by emotion that logic. Therefore if your partner communicates with you by always apologizing, discussing, compromising, grovelling or begging it is like water on a ducks back – it is ineffective and possibly will even take away from any attraction you hold for your husband.

So what do you have to do to wake up the man you fell in love with, to build attraction and to save the marriage? The answer starts with his leadership. Work on him to re-establish his leadership qualities. To revitalise the hunter instinct in him so that he once again becomes that amazing, compelling, dynamic, charismatic leader you were once attracted to. And then your biology will take care of the rest.

Your sex drive will be reactivated. You will fall passionately in love once more. Sound too good to be true? Believe it. With a little bit of research and know how you can get your man back, you can wake up the leader in him, you can save the marriage. I wish I had.

The Five Stages of Team Development

Most experts in team development agree that teams will go through five different stages. How fast a team moves through each stage will depend on the team members, their individual skills, the work they are expected to do, and the type of leadership available to the team.

Bruce Tuckman deemed the four main stages of team development in order as Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing. Later, as self-managed teams became common in business, he added a fifth stage of Adjourning/Transforming. Thomas Quick called the five stages for teams: Searching, Defining, Identifying, Processing, and Assimilating/Reforming. Whatever term is used for the stages, teams will go through all five during their developmental and working processes.

Stage 1 – The first stage is when the team is formed and members meet. They learn what the team opportunities and challenge will be. Individual members may be confused about their role or not understand the need for the team. Members will agree on goals and assign actions for work, often working independently. Ground rules or team guidelines are established. At the start, the team leader may be a member of the group, a supervisor, a manager, or a consultant who will facilitate the team-building process. Leadership will help the team to define their processes. At this stage, the leader needs to be directive and understand the requirements for team training to move through each stage.

Stage 2 – During the second stage, individual expression of ideas occurs and there is open conflict between members. Members tend to focus on details rather than the issues and compete for influence. Low trust among team members is an evident indicator of this stage. The team needs to select their desired leadership style and decision methodology. The team leader can help by stressing tolerance and patience between members. The leader should guide the team process towards clear goals, defined roles, acceptable team behavior, and a mutual feedback process for team communication.

Stage 3 – In the third stage, the team develops work habits that support group rules and values. They use established tools and methods; exhibit good behaviors; mutual trust, motivation, and open communication increase; positive teamwork and group focus are apparent. The team relationships grow and individual characteristics are understood and appropriately utilized. The team leader continues to encourage participation and professionalism among the team members.

Stage 4 – The fourth stage shows high levels of loyalty, participation, motivation, and group decision-making. Knowledge sharing, cross-training, and interdependence increases. Team is self-directing in development of plans and strategy to meet their goals and carry out work. Personal growth and sharing is encouraged throughout membership. The leader becomes a facilitator aiding the team in communication processes and helping if they revert to a prior stage.

Stage 5 – For project teams, temporary committees, or task forces coming to an end, there will be a finalizing stage as they .celebrate and recognize group achievement. Then some mourning over the dissolving of the team relationship and begin planning for the change in individual work requirements. During this stage, leadership needs to emphasize organization gratitude and both team and individual recognition. For continuous work teams, there may be a higher performance level as they develop and transform as individuals and reform into revised teams. It is important to note that continuous work teams may revert to prior stages when new people are added to the team.

Time and effort are required to move through the various team development stages. Every team will go through all the stages. However the timeline of each stage may be different for each team depending on the individual members and their skill levels, the work the team is expected to accomplish, and team leadership during each stage.

The Social Stigma On Call Center People and The Growing Issue On Unemployed Graduates – Part I

A friend of mine, much to his chagrin, was duty-bound to study nursing in order to conform to what his parents wanted (a familiar but sad reality in many Filipino households). And being the good son that he was, he graduated with flying colors and eventually passed the nursing licensure exam. However, after four painstaking years of memorizing tongue-twisting medical terms plus an additional two years of hard hospital labor (as volunteers, which means you get no pay at all but you work in various killer shifts, and what is more damning is the fact that there are hospitals who charge neophyte nurses fees before they allow them to become slaves in their infirmaries, talk about one of the biggest ironies of work life), my friend and his family realized that thanks to the burgeoning world economic crisis, the future in landing a lucrative job in nursing looks bleak at best.

There is a massive influx of registered nurses today and that is the reason why local hospitals have the guts to offer sarcastically take-it-or-leave-it cellar salaries. And the suffering of local RNs does not even end there. The hiring process has become so stringent you may have to literally wipe someone’s ass in order to get hired – for a measly $170 per month. My friend, not wanting to be a part of the merciful demographics, decided to tell his parents that he will be applying for a call center job. What he got was a resounding “NO”.

The widespread perception on working in call centers is that it is a no-brainer job and many parents do not want their kids to waste all that they have learned in college by working at night, wearing a headset, and talking to angry Americans. The description is true, most call center shifts are at night because of the need to interact live with customers on the other side of the world which is on a totally different time zone, hence, the discrepancy in work schedules. However, representatives who provide customer service and technical support for customers based in Australia work during the day. The depiction of call center agents wearing headsets is also generally true, although there are other facets of customer support which does not entail verbally interacting with customers using the phones and these include email and chat support. The portrayal of call center agents as regularly talking to angry Americans may be partly true although there is no statistics yet on the ratio of angry callers against those who are not, and frankly speaking, it is also hard to discern whether a caller is angry or not.

But in the midst of all these negative feedback on the job of a call center agent, the advantages and benefits far outweigh the downbeat side of it. First off, do not construe this as a personal attack but nurses do get hollered at as well. In fact, they have to face angry patients and relatives of patients on a daily basis and on a more intimate fashion. I would rather sit in an air-conditioned room and listen to an American shout at me on the phone knowing that he is halfway around the world than feel the hot breath of a sick person on my face shouting invectives at me because he does not feel well. Second, the claim that call center work is a no-brainer is definitely the inexpert outburst of people who have not worked in this industry at all or those who have worked within the confines of a call center but have not had the opportunity to be promoted to other non-agent positions.

The truth is, the call center trade is one of the most dynamic industries in the entire planet. If applied to manufacturing and production, the call center system will push those industries at least a decade forward. Always gunning for the highest customer service scores, call centers utilize some of the most rigorous monitoring and coaching program in order to retain the trust of their clients. Quality attributes pertaining to calls have been strategically quantified in order to make the assessment program uncomplicated. Very few manufacturing companies make use of this quality numeric program and if company owners only knew how effective this system can be to their business, their company’s productivity would have tripled within a short period of time. The training progression in call centers is also topnotch. Selecting the Character’s Objective

This article focuses on another dramatic choice, namely, what the character wants. What is the conscious intent of the character? This element is commonly called the objective or intention. It is also called the inner action or subtext. Motivation and goal are other labels sometimes used for the objective.

The selection process for the objective or intention is a critical part of the story telling process. Why? Because the essence and purpose of the entire story is carried forward by, what each character wants. While one character pursues a given goal, their objective faces counter thrusts by other characters or forces within the story, and thus creates conflict. Without this conflict, there would be little dramatic structure to the story to engage and entertain the audience.

Selecting the wrong intention or not conveying the intention to the audience can distort an entire scene and possibly the whole play. It can leave the scene with little or no conflict and thus no purpose. On the other hand, an inspired and well-developed intention can illuminate a scene to fantastic heights making it forever memorable in the mind of the audience.

How do you select the objective of the character? Where do you find the clues about what it might be? Look first to the script for it might be openly expressed in the dialogue. It might also be hid in the stage directions. It could also be concluded from information revealed later in the story. Another clue may lie in the wants of opposing characters.

One of the pitfalls in selecting an objective is to follow blindly the intentions indicated by the dialogue or stage directions. They are not always correct. The intention can be a contradiction to the character’s dialogue and action. In life, people do not always reveal their true intentions and the result can be quite dramatic. Delaying such a revelation can make the story structurally stronger, especially when it deals in fraud or deception.

There are many other factors to consider in selecting the objective such as, who are you in the story, your relationship with other characters, and the non-character obstacles you face. Are you the protagonist, the one we root for, or the antagonist, the one creating the obstacles? Or are you a minor character with an incidental function in the story?

The type of actor you are also has a bearing on which objective is best. For instance, Clint Eastwood would probably select a different objective than would Brad Pitt were Brad Pitt playing the same role. Likewise, the type of play you are doing is also a consideration. A scene played as a comedy versus one played as a drama might result in a different set of objectives for the characters.

Once you have read the entire script and have determined how your scene fits into the over all story, you should have a set of possibilities. Which one is the best? Which one will make the scene come alive? Some actors select an objective that is comfortable for them to portray. Instead, the choice should be one that supports the relationships, the scene, and the story.

To make strong dramatic choices, one needs to follow some analytical guidelines. First ask yourself, whose objective is it you are seeking? From whose viewpoint? Certainly, it is not the director’s. Not yours, the actor. The objective is selected from the viewpoint of the character you are playing. What the character thinks he or she wants at that given moment in the play.

Next, the objective should be formulated in active terms such as: To obtain…to have… to do… It should be short simple phases in the character’s own language and worded in such a way that the character wants to do something specific. Moreover, behind each intention, each objective, there a reason or motivation that moves the character toward action.

Look first to intentions with selfish motives. In credible drama, as in life, you won’t find noble motives. When it comes down to the decisive moment, we are all looking out for number one, ourselves. So make your characters real by seeking selfish wants.

At this point, let’s look at some objectives and evaluate them. Before looking ahead, attempt to identify the most common faults.

OBJECTIVES WITH FAULTS:

1. To introduce Howard to Ellen so Howard won’t be around so much and then Amy and I can get together at the apartment I share with Howard.

2. To get my mother into the hospital for an emergency operation

3. To make my character reveal his true intentions

4. To make the audience laugh at this character

5. To indicate the struggle of my character

Compare your analysis of the objective with the faults identified below:

1. To long, not specific, to many objectives, not actable. Better objective: To get Howard out.

2. Weak objective, not specific, not selfish. Better objective: To save my mother.

3. Made from actor’s viewpoint, not in the character’s own words. Better objective: To tell the truth.

4. From the playwright or director’s viewpoint, not in the character’s own words. Plays a result and not character’s wants. Better objective: To get some respect.

5. From the actor’s viewpoint, not in the character’s own words, not selfish, and lacks motivation from character. Better objective: To get out alive.

Once you have chosen the character’s objective, check that the scene or even the play provides enough dramatic resistance. This resistance may be the counter intention of another character. It may also be internal hurdles such as self-doubts, beliefs, commitments, or phobias. Other obstacles such as the nature’s elements, time restrictions, or physical barriers may have a bearing on how the objective is selected.

Usually, in a two-character scene, the other character provides the opposition. The following example demonstrates how dramatic conflict is obtained through opposing intentions and emotions. Note how certain choices support the dramatic equation, risk vs. consequences, and propel the story to its greatest potential.

An armed psychopathic killer escapes, hitches a ride and attempts to persuade the women driver of his innocence. To pass through the roadblocks, he needs her help. Which pair of intentions would result in the most dramatic scene?

Intention/Emotion Pairings

1. Him: To escape/Fear

1. Her: To help him escape/Anticipation

2. Him: To convince her/Determination

2. Her: To find the truth/Determination

3. Him: To keep from killing her/Rage

3. Her: To save myself/Terror

In the first pairings, the intentions converge on a common objective, and the main obstacle becomes the roadblocks and the police. The protagonist/antagonist boundaries become murky and we are not sure for whom to root.

The second pairings has the intentions in conflict, but the stakes are not high enough to pull in the audience.

In the third pairings, the stakes are much higher for the intentions ignite a kill or be killed, do or die crisis. The killer must hold back his rage having to depend on the woman to get him through the roadblocks. The woman driver, however, is not convinced of his story and therefore, knows he will likely kill again. She must act to save her own life.

MAINTAINING/CHANGING THE OBJECTIVE

The next consideration is how long do you stay with one objective? Do you keep the same objective throughout the scene or does a scene contain a number of objectives? Here again, some general guidelines should be followed.

As a rule, select one dominant objective for the scene. Stay with that objective until you succeed or fail, or until something comes to change it. Let’s use the above example to illustrate this process.

Suppose at the roadblock, the police officer asks the woman to unlatch the trunk so he can check inside. She about to flick the remote switch opening the trunk when instead she hands him the ignition keys. Something has changed and calls for a new set of objectives. Now her objective has changed from being passive to taking action. It might be to signal the police officer in some way and her emotion might change to determination. Your choices may be different in this scene, yet the principles remain the same. Select one dominant objective for the scene. Stay with that objective until your character succeeds or fails, or until something comes to change it. You would then select another objective, one befitting the situation and your character’s role in the story.

To aid in the selection process, I’ve compiled a list of intentions from various workshop scenes. This list provides examples and the proper format for stating the intention. They are listed according to worthiness.

Improving Your Self-Image – How and Why it is Important

You can’t be happy if you have a poor self-image, and of course, happiness is what we all want. What is self-image? Briefly, it’s what you think about yourself — the image that you have built up in your mind about how good, successful, talented, or how unlucky, ugly and fat you are. Changing it is not something you can do overnight; it’s an image that was developed over many years (your lifetime), an image that is based on all your successes and failures. To a large degree it’s also based on how you feel other people react to you, and how they feel about you. It is the foundation upon which your personality is built.

Self-image is important because it rules literally everything that happens to you in your life. It limits how successful you will be, and it certainly limits your happiness and well-being, and this means you must have a good self-image to feel good. If you have a poor one it’s going to limit you throughout your life.

Fortunately, you can change what you think about yourself, but it’s not something that can be done overnight. It took years to build up the self-image you have, so you’re going to have to work to change it. Furthermore, much of what you think about yourself may be right, but it’s well-known that most people underestimate themselves. You are likely more creative, more talented, and even better-looking than you think. The key is to bring your self-image into line with your “true” self, but be honest: it’s not much use trying to change it into something that it isn’t; it won’t work. You have to truly believe that it is a valid image, and you have to be convinced that it is the “real” you.

How do you go about this? Strangely, you have to be subtle. If you just close your eyes and forcefully tell yourself that you’re going to change, you won’t. It’s like trying to break a bad habit. As you likely know, if you try to force yourself to break a habit by thinking about it continuously, you won’t get anywhere. But it is, indeed, “thought” that will bring about the change. It takes time, but I’m sure you know that thought is a powerful thing.

So if you truly believe you can change yourself, you can. You have to begin by getting a clear picture of what you would like to be, or perhaps I should say, the person you believe you really are. Be realistic. Think in terms of your successes and your strengths. Use them to build up a convincing picture of yourself and how you will act under various circumstances. Picture this “new self” in your mind.

Why does this work? It works because of the way your mind, nervous system and brain operate. You have both a conscious and an unconscious mind; the key is to reach your unconscious mind. The unconscious mind plays a much larger role in our life than you may think. It is the thing that shapes and forms our self-image. We think about our problems and failures; we turn them over and over in our mind, and even when we are no longer consciously thinking about them, our unconscious mind is dealing with them.

If we spend most of our time thinking about our successes and the good things in our life, we will have few problems with our self-image. But for most of us, this isn’t the case. We spend far too much time thinking about our failures, our shortcomings, and the people we have a grudge against. We think about them until they become ingrained in our personality

To change your self-image you have to undo all the negative programming that has been going on for years, so it’s obviously not going to be a “quick fix.” It’s going to take time, but it can be done. The trick is to “fix” on this new image — the image that is based on your successes and other pluses about yourself. Picture it as much as possible, but do even more than that: picture the details. Picture everything about yourself — and make sure it is an image you are satisfied with and proud of. And in time your self-image will definitely improve.

Here’s a quick tip to make your call center customers feel at ease on the first few minutes of the call:

Personalize the call by using their names.

Is it easy to do? You bet. Check my tips below on how to personalize the call:

* If you already have a system (computer application that you are using when taking calls), check if the database already has the customer information ready to use on that call. There are some systems that already upload the information on the database as soon as the phone rings. So use it to your advantage.

* If the information isn’t there yet (and if you are required to build the customer’s profile on your database) then go with the spiel (usually given during the call center training or quality assurance meetings ) that you are provided to get the customer’s name.

* Just ask by saying, “May I have your name?” instead of “May I know your name?” The former will generate more appropriate response by giving their names right away, while customers will usually reply with the answer “No” should you opt to use the latter.

* Politely ask them to spell their name for you should you have a challenge in understanding their names. And make sure to listen very carefully so as not to ask the same information again.

* Quickly explain the benefit of letting them spell their names for you. You can tell them that you are doing this to make sure that you will save the right information on your end. And they will love you for that.

* Ask them on how they say their names for those somewhat confusing ones. You wouldn’t want to say DOGLAS to call your customer with the name of DOUGLAS, right? See, pronunciation is still a key in this area.

* Use Ma’am and Sir to your discretion. Using these names repeatedly will surely make your customer feel awkward about your conversation that can also lead them to become irate eventually.

Aside from observing all these things just to quickly personalize the call, nothing beats the fact that honesty, sincerity and politeness will definitely be equal to a great call experience. Add a dash of humor (if necessary, or if the customer initiated it) and you are on your way to become a call center superstar.
